Codefile - frequently asked questions:

Q: What does Codefile cover?
A: It covers over 40 fields, for example Sedol, ISIN, Issuer Name, Country of Register, CFI Code, Security Class, or Industrial Classification, etc.

Q: If there is a missing SEDOL, how would I go about getting it set up?
A: If you would like the London Stock Exchange to assign a SEDOL to a security the following information is required:

  1. issuer name
  2. security description/ par value
  3. security redemption
  4. ISIN code
  5. Listing/Exchange
  6. Fund Managers name if the security is a Fund.

There is no charge to assign a SEDOL to a security. You can either e-mail or fax the London Stock Exchange in order to set it up on
Fax: 0207 410 6848 or E-mail: smfnewissuers@londonstockexchange.com

Q: Do the terms `multiple listed Sedol’s and secondary Sedol’s have the same meaning?
A: Both terms simply mean that more than one Sedol has been allocated to the same security. All listings have different information sources.

Q: Why does SMF appear as the information source for the security?
A: SMF can appear as the info source when:

  1. It is an old issue and the information for this field wasn't available when it was set up (LSE are currently in the process of updating)
  2. An assented line needs to be implemented, normally in the event of a takeover etc. The security has not necessarily been issued in the UK but the line needs to be set up for settlement reason.

Q: What does QQ stand for in an ISIN e.g. QQ5987655448?
A: A security is allocated an ISIN that starts with QQ when the company is going through a corporate Action, such as a takeover. The company being taken over will be allocated a temporary ISIN code (i.e. a dummy ISIN) which will begin with QQ. Once the Corporate action is finalised the security will then be allocated a new ISIN. Normally this process will not last too long and the security can have a Trading status whilst this is going on.

Q: Are SEDOL’s recycled and if so how often?
A: In principal we try not to recycle however for normal types of securities we can reuse after they have been defunct for 7 years for short term instruments such as traded options we can reuse after a year.

Q: Why are securities given a Coded trading status?
A: Coded securities are set up either when a security is listed on multiple exchanges or solely for pricing purposes and in the event of a corporate action. They do not have the same rights as the trading (main) line.

Q: What does ZZ under the country of register stand for?
A: ZZ appears in the country of register because the securities have no share or bearer registrar to the knowledge of the LSE. However, where possible the LSE are willing to amend their records should this information become available.

Q:How would I find information pertaining to a specific instrument (e.g. equity)?
A: Select the Security Type under the section “Search In (Security Type)”. (This search criteria can be modified to suit the required result.)

Q:How would I find information pertaining to Trading Securities only?
A: Under the “Search In (Status) you would select Trading and this would give you a result of Trading securities only. (This search criteria can be modified to suit the required result.)
